When it comes to fertility, egg quality is one of the most important pieces of the puzzle. While age plays a role, it is not the only factor that matters. Mitochondrial health is equally important and, importantly, something we can support. Mitochondria are often described as the energy powerhouses of the cell. I like to think of them as the battery within the egg. They provide the energy needed for fertilisation and early embryo development.

The good news is that while we cannot change our age, we can improve how well our mitochondria function. This is where diet, lifestyle, and mitochondrial supplements for fertility can make a meaningful difference.




Why Mitochondrial Health Matters for Fertility

Egg cells contain more mitochondria than almost any other cell in the body. This is because they have a very demanding job. Fertilisation and early embryo development require a huge amount of energy. If mitochondrial function is compromised, energy production can fall. As a result, this can impact egg quality and embryo development.


In addition, mitochondria also help protect DNA within the egg. This is important because DNA damage can affect both fertilisation and pregnancy outcomes. Therefore, supporting mitochondrial health is one of the most effective ways to support egg quality.


Can You Improve Mitochondrial Function?

The short answer is yes. However, it is important to start with the foundations. Nutrition, blood sugar balance, sleep, and stress management all play a key role in mitochondrial health. For example, a diet rich in antioxidants helps reduce oxidative stress. Stable blood sugar supports consistent energy production. In addition, good sleep is essential for cellular repair. That said, supplementation can help accelerate progress. This is especially useful if you are preparing for IVF or working within a shorter timeframe.


My Mitochondrial Supplement Stack for Fertility

Below are some of my most commonly used mitochondrial supplements for fertility. These are the ones I use most often in clinical practice.


CoQ10 or Ubiquinol (200 to 600mg)

CoQ10 is one of the most researched supplements for egg quality. It plays a direct role in mitochondrial energy production. It helps generate ATP, which is the energy currency of the cell. In addition, it acts as an antioxidant and helps protect DNA within the egg. Ubiquinol is the active form and may be better absorbed, especially as we get older.


Acetyl-L-Carnitine

Acetyl-L-Carnitine plays a key role in energy metabolism. I often describe it as a shuttle bus. It transports fatty acids into the mitochondria. Once inside, these fats can be used to produce energy. Without this process, energy production becomes less efficient. As a result, this can impact egg quality over time.


Alpha-Lipoic Acid

Alpha-Lipoic Acid is a powerful antioxidant. It helps protect mitochondria from oxidative stress. Oxidative stress is one of the main drivers of cellular ageing. This includes ageing within the egg. In addition, Alpha-Lipoic Acid helps regenerate other antioxidants. Therefore, it supports overall cellular resilience.


B Vitamins

B vitamins are essential for mitochondrial function. They are involved in energy production and methylation.

For example, they help convert nutrients into usable energy. In addition, they support DNA repair and cellular function. Because of this, they are a key part of any fertility-focused supplement plan.


Omega 3 Fatty Acids

Omega 3 fatty acids support the structure of cell membranes. This includes the membranes of the mitochondria.

Healthy membranes allow mitochondria to function more efficiently. In addition, omega 3 helps reduce inflammation. Lower inflammation creates a more supportive environment for egg development.


NMN (Nicotinamide Mononucleotide)

NMN is a precursor to NAD+, which is essential for mitochondrial energy production. NAD+ levels naturally decline with age. Therefore, supporting these levels can be beneficial for egg quality. You may have seen NAD+ injections becoming popular. However, I am seeing more clients experiencing side effects. These include palpitations and difficulty sleeping. For now, I prefer NMN as a more gentle option. Some people choose NR instead, as it is smaller. However, we currently have more data on NMN, which is why it is often my preference.


A Note on Individualisation

It is important to remember that supplementation is not one size fits all. The right combination and dosage will depend on your individual health, medical history, and fertility journey. Therefore, it is always worth seeking personalised guidance before starting a new supplement plan.


You Cannot Out-Supplement a Poor Diet

This is the part I always come back to. Supplements can be incredibly helpful. However, they cannot replace the foundations. If your diet is lacking key nutrients, mitochondrial function will still be compromised. The same applies to poor sleep, high stress, and unstable blood sugar. In addition, relying only on supplements can lead to frustration. You may not see the results you are hoping for. Instead, think of supplements as a tool. They work best when layered on top of a strong nutritional and lifestyle foundation.


Conclusion

Mitochondrial health plays a central role in egg quality and fertility outcomes. While age is a factor we cannot change, mitochondrial function is something we can actively support. Through a combination of nutrition, lifestyle, and targeted mitochondrial supplements for fertility, we can create a more supportive environment for egg development.
